Nurses are on the front lines of the Covid-19 pandemic. They are a significant part of the health workforce: they outnumber physicians in most OECD countries with three nurses for every doctor, on average.

As nurses and other health professionals were mobilised to play the role of first responders, health systems have sought ways to increase the number of staff available and to make the best use of their work.
