Low-carbon hydrogen has great potential as a carbon-free energy carrier and can play a key role in decarbonising hard-to-abate energy and industry systems. Still, creating an enabling environment for countries to develop their market and trade strategies for green hydrogen production includes setting international standards, regulations and certifications that provide the necessary information on its carbon footprint and environmental impact. Efforts to advance on low-carbon hydrogen certification are already taking place by some international organisations but further progress needs to be made to make mechanisms interoperable.
This webinar aimed at understanding the considerations and challenges in the creation of international certification mechanisms and in their harmonisation to facilitate trade partnerships. The session also explored the roles that governments, international organisations and private sectors can plan in developing hydrogen certification.
