Explore the future of the steel industry and its path to carbon neutrality by mid-century. This OECD Steel Committee virtual workshop will spotlight emerging technologies for steel decarbonisation such as Hydrogen-based Direct Reduced Iron (H2-DRI), Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), and Iron Ore Electrolysis (IOE). Each of these technologies is at a different stage of readiness and faces unique challenges, with the ability to deploy these varying across countries due to differences in resources and policies. Despite their unique hurdles, these technologies share common challenges, including infrastructure development, cost management, and generating demand.
This workshop will bring together policymakers and industry leaders to tackle key policy questions. Discussions will focus on how companies are adopting, and countries are supporting the adoption of these technologies, balancing the need for technology-agnostic support with leveraging competitive advantages. Additionally, the workshop will explore how Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) policies can help companies overcome significant adoption and diffusion challenges.
