The 33rd FLAN meeting advanced on three action tracks: sharing experience the issues around farm and farm household income, income gaps between rural and urban areas, and the contribution of agriculture to rural economy; continuing the discussion on “Social issues and related data gaps” that begun of the 32^nd FLAN meeting in November 2023; discussing and updating on the work on characterising agricultural resilience, with a specific focus on animal disease.

The 32nd FLAN meeting consisted of four thematic sessions, all of them in line with the areas of work for the FLAN identified for the 2023-24 biennium during the 30th FLAN meeting: Session 1 aimed to share experiences on identifying and monitoring social issues in agriculture; Session 2 focused on the question of “How will farmers look like in the future to address the triple challenge of food security, inclusive livelihoods and sustainability?”; Session 3 aimed to discuss and update on the on-going work on characterising farming resilience;  Session 4 was the first joint session with experts from the Food-Chain Analysis Network (FCAN) to exchange views and discuss challenges of the farm-level calculation tools for measuring and communicating environmental impacts. 

During the 31st FLAN meeting participants had the opportunity to share new research findings on several topics including, among others, on farm level data collection using digital technologies, on the adoption of digital tools by farmers to adapt to climate change, on social sustainability indicators for agriculture and on characterising agricultural resilience. 

The agenda of this meeting included a forward-looking discussion around topical areas in the programme of work for the 2023-24 biennium as well as a session on how to improve the way of working of the FLAN. Other discussed topics included: the challenges of monitoring biodiversity and developing biodiversity indicators, agricultural resilience and digital technology adoption by farmers. 

The 29th FLAN meeting had a particular focus on a monographic session on “Synergies and gaps between farm- and firm-level data”, due to the growing interest in exploiting linkages between farm surveys and business surveys to better understand the sector dynamics at micro level beyond the farm and on-farm businesses. The meeting was divided into two sessions. The first session focused on experiences analysing agricultural and rural policies using farm and business surveys and on opportunities and challenges to enhance micro analysis of agriculture and rural. The second session included a presentation on the latest results from the work on characterising resilience, discussed in the previous meeting in October 2021.

This meeting included a joint session with the Network on Total Factor Productivity and the Environment (TFPN) with the objective building bridges between the work in the two networks and the OECD: work on aggregate measurement of total factor productivity and its extension to include environmental inputs and outputs; the work on micro-data and analysis at farm level; and the ongoing work of the OECD to build composite indicators of sustainable productivity growth. The agenda also included an update of the work on characterizing resilience that was launched and discussed in the 27^th FLAN in April 2021 and a monographic session on sustainable practices and water management.

The 27th FLAN meeting included a monographic session covering different aspects of resilience in agriculture, three topical presentations on farm income and a discussion on organizational issues of the Network. 

The meeting was dedicated to discussing ongoing work on dynamics of farm performance and policy effects. Then, a more forward-looking discussion took place around three broad areas under the programme of work 2021-22: farm labour characteristics, characterisation of resilience and policy impacts on environmental sustainability.

During the 31st FLAN meeting participants had the opportunity to discuss proposals for the implementation of the Network project on the dynamics of farm performance and policy effects, additional studies on farm household income and well-being, as well as areas of mutual interest in the context of the OECD programme of work and budget for 2021-22.
