As the world changes, so must the approach to how health system performance is assessed. The COVID-19 pandemic revealed that health systems were underprepared and therefore not as resilient as they should have been. This has led to calls for urgent action to ensure that health systems are more resilient to future shocks, and prepared for ageing populations and increasing digitalisation.
