Natural protected areas are national terrestrial and marine domains which receive protection due to their recognised natural and ecological values.

The exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of a country extends 200 nautical miles from the coastline, or to the mid-point between coastlines where the EEZ of different countries would otherwise overlap.

This indicator is measured as percentage of total land area or of Exclusive Economic Zones.
