1. Ireland: Data on Ireland relates to centre-based provision for children aged between 0 and primary school entry. It does not include:

a. Home-based provision, which is currently (2021) outside the scope of regulation and on which very little data is available.

b. Provision within primary schools (either junior/senior infant classes or Early Start classes). While the compulsory school age in Ireland is 6, children generally start school before their 6th birthday. Participation in infant classes in schools is possible from 4 or 5 years old, and a limited number of children attend Early Start classes or specialist provision for children with disabilities before the age of 4. While before the compulsory school age, this provision within schools is not part of mainstream ECEC provision, and provision in infant classes is categorised as ISCED Level 1.
