Stéphan Vincent-Lancrin (Senior Analyst and Deputy Head of Division, OECD) edited the book.
Ryan S. Baker (Associate Professor, University of Pennsylvania) was a Scientific Advisor for the book, ensuring it embeds the latest scientific knowledge in the domain.
Some of the authors provided graphics, pictures and video materials to make these technology developments more visible and tangible to the readers.
The book is one of the outputs of the “Smart data and Digital Technology in Education: AI, Learning Analytics and Beyond” project of the Centre for Educational Research and Innovation (CERI) within the OECD Directorate for Education and Skills. Stéphan Vincent-Lancrin conceptualised and leads it.
Within the OECD, Andreas Schleicher, Director for Education and Skills and Advisor to the OECD Secretary-General on Education Policy provided invaluable feedback, contributions and intellectual input to the report. Dirk Van Damme (Senior Counsellor and Acting Head of CERI, OECD) is also thanked for his support. Carlos González-Sancho (Analyst, OECD) played a key role in setting the foundations of the project before moving to other responsibilities within the OECD. Vivien Liu (Intern), Mathias Bouckaert, Cassie Hague, Koen Van Lieshout, Quentin Vidal, Reyer van der Vlies (Analysts, OECD) identified multiple country examples in the report and drafted some of the boxes in the report. Gwénaël Jacotin (Statistician), Tirso Martin and Yunze Xie (former Interns, OECD) also contributed in different ways, notably through analyses of the education technology industry. Madeleine Gereke provided excellent project assistance during the whole process, with special thanks for the completion efforts and work on the launch of the book. Cassandra Davis, Sophie Limoges, Della Shin, Henri Pearson, Jason Fallow and Alexis Cheney oversaw the publication and/or communication process. Clara Young copy-edited the book (with the help of Jennifer Allain for Chapter 5) – and sometimes more... Other colleagues are also gratefully acknowledged for their comments and suggestions: Glenda Quintini (OECD Directorate for Employment, Labour and Social Affairs) and Marieke Vandeweyer (OECD Skills Centre).
The CERI governing board is acknowledged for very helpful comments on the initial plan for the book and for their feedback on the final manuscript. Special thanks to Osama Rahman (United Kingdom), who made very helpful suggestions to clarify (and simplify) the framing of the analysis, and to Aune Vaulk (Estonia) for thorough comments on the initial project.
Colleagues outside the organisation were also invited to give feedback on the report. At Microsoft, Alexa Joyce and Maria Langworthy provided detailed and very helpful feedback on the manuscript.
Finally, a big thankyou to Gerhard Richter and his atelier, who generously permitted the use of his famous 1971 painting as the cover image of the book. Beyond evoking the binary and pixellated world of digitalisation, it shows how straitjacketed rigour can coexist with colour, fantasy, energy and beauty.
